“You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.”-Bob Marley
Julie Garcia is the former Essex County District Attorney, the first woman ever to hold that office. She also served as Assistant District Attorney in Rensselaer and Suffolk Counties. Julie is now in private practice with offices in Port Henry and Warrensburg.
Born in Ticonderoga, Julie Garcia graduated from Moriah Central School where she ran track and played soccer. She entered Hudson Valley Community College intending to become a physical education teacher. But life changes and so did Julie. Her own personal experiences compelled her to eventually enroll in Siena College’s nationally accredited social work program. After graduating from Siena cum laude, Julie entered Albany Law School more committed than ever to helping others.
Julie worked her way through Siena and earned her way through Albany Law.

Julie grew up in the hamlet of Witherbee, the second oldest of six children in a family that literally dug its existence out of Mineville’s iron ore mines.
As an undergraduate she supported herself by waiting tables and tending bar at restaurants within driving distance to either her home or her college.
The diplomas that hang on Julie Garcia’s wall would not be there if not for places like Gaffney’s in Saratoga Springs, The Ripe Tomato in Malta, The Boardwalk, The Caldwell Café’, and The Garrison in Lake George, The Colonial Arms and Cronin’s Golf Resort in Warrensburg, The River House in Schenectady, McGeary’s in Albany.
As a law student Julie was a Semi-Finalist in the prestigious Dominick L. Gabrielli Moot Court Competition. She was a Law Intern in the Saratoga County District Attorney’s office and worked at Albany’s Domestic Violence Law Clinic. Julie graduated from Albany in May of 1999. By August her strong defense of domestic violence victims led to her first professional position as Assistant Suffolk County DA where she prosecuted hundreds of family violence cases.
In 2001 Julie moved back to Upstate New York to be closer to her family. Both her mother and sister were fighting uphill battles against years of addiction. Julie tried to free them but, within a year, both were gone. But grief yielded to reality. Sorrow ignited resolve. Julie became a single mother to two nieces and opened her own law office in order to make a living. For twenty years Julie Garcia has handled cases in Federal Court, New York State Supreme Court, Family Court, Criminal Court and town justice courts.
She lives in Warrensburg.
